NAMPA CIVIC CENTER
NAMPA, ID

PORT ANGELES HIGH SCHOOL
PORT ANGELES, WA
OCTOBER 4, 2009
Almost every morning my brain picks out a melody, usually Irish Tenors
but then sometimes John Denver, and plays it in my head for most of the day.
This morning it was Schubert's Serenade with which Anthony regaled us
last weekend in Nampa and Port Angeles.
The concert was sparsely attended compared to last time, but then the
Dynamic Duo will do their best for 2 or 2000. They had been on the road from
Price Edward's Island through Denver, not quite coast to coast, but close
enough. Here is the song list.
Du Bist Wei Enie Blume
My Lagan Love (I usually don't like minor keys, but this is an exception)
Kitty Me Love - perennial favorite
Sally Gardens
Eileen Og - Haven't heard him sing this in a long time.
Oh the way he holds those notes, "Eileen OOOOOOOOg,"
Patrick regaled us with their adventures trying to re-enter the United States.
I guess they didn't tell the border patrol they were world
renowned singers. He then sang Galway Bay.
Because You're Mine
Palatine's Daughter - Another favorite patter song.
None but the Lonely Heart
Play Gypsy, Play Gypsy
(I don't remember, wrote down the wrong song)
Where Ere You Walk - I wasn't expecting that one. Haven't heard it
since Escondido in 2003 or so. It is a favorite of mine.
The Bold Gendarmes
Finiculi, Finicula - I have to look up the words again.
La Dona Mobile - I love this aria from him along with Una Furtiva Lagrima.
He does it with such arrogance and charm at the same time.
Schubert's Serenade
Father's Lullaby - Patrick surely does know how to write for
Anthony's voice, lovely song.
McBreen's Heifer - He can sing this one any time, charming to the max.
Patrick again with the joke about the Englishman, Scotsman and
Irishman and their sandwiches. Makes me laugh every
time. He also sang The Girl with the Irish Brogue,
don't think I have heard this one.
How Are Things in Glocamora.
Empty Chairs and Empty Tables - This is where you can pick up
the richness of his lower register that Berta was
talking about in her review.
In the Stilly Night
Bird Song at Eventide.
Tenors duet - another charmer ("I've got top C!")
Danny Boy
Under the Bridges of Paris - Dedicated to all the ladies in the audience.
Granada
O Sole Mio
And then it was over much too soon. The next morning we were in
our car driving 8 hours back to home and then on to Port Angeles for
Sunday's concert. Just when I think I am being silly and ruining my
health traipsing around the countryside, I meet some ladies who
are also ruining their health traipsing around the countryside. This
time it was 2 ladies from New Mexico and Texas who had come
out just to hear Anthony and Patrick. I feel better now.
The Port Angeles concert was a bit different. It was in the afternoon,
and the string section of the high school orchestra was in attendance.
They opened the program with a musical version of The Pirates of the
Caribbean from the movie. The sound was much superior to that of
the Nampa Civic Center. Plus you could tell they had actually had a
good night's sleep. The program was essentially the same except
they left out a few songs, most pointedly, Where Ere You Walk.
I wanted to hear it again! BUT, instead Anthony did Younger than
Springtime and If I Loved You with the orchestra. A fair trade, I suppose.
Finiculi, Finicula and O Sole Mio went by the boards too so he could also
sing Bring Him Home and Gounod's Ave Maria, again with the orchestra.
The encore was still Granada, which is second to none. I have it on
CD by Ramon Vargas and Placido Domingo, but Anthony is still the favorite.
After every concert, I have to think to myself, "How does he do it?"
I guess the answer is practice, practice, practice.
