HALLELUIAH BROADWAY
PBS SPECIAL TAPED IN PRAGUE FEBRUARY 8, 2010
OBSERVATIONS of MARY JO KITTLE
Page 2
It's the day before, but preparations have begun.
I just went across the street again. There is still a load of activity there, even though
daylight is disappearing. They are setting up spotlights across from the
church - basically in the back parking lot of my hotel. I asked the two
men setting up the spotlights if they are for tomorrow night, and they said yes.
They must be shining them on the church as the opening for the special, I guess.
I got along great with the Prague Airport Transport man on the way from the airport.
He told me about some of the landmarks as we passed them. That is how
I knew the president's house that I photographed, up on the hill across
from the hotel. I got quite a reaction, a big smile and "of course, I am happy" ,
from him when I said that I bet he is happy that the Soviet Union is gone
from the Czech Republic. He was born in Praha (that is what the Czechs
call Prague) and told me that most people from here never leave.
I am so tired that my eyes ache. I just flopped on top of the bed for a second
and fell immediately asleep. I will go for dinner in the hotel before 7 pm.
I had a nice dinner at the hotel, and then ran outside to see what is
happening there. The spotlights are on full strength. The church looks almost
white. I saw a lot of activity there - what appeared to me to be three cars with
hired drivers in a line outside the church. I bet that Anthony and the other
performers are there practicing still, and those cars are going to take them
either to dinner or back to their hotels. Mind the Gap Films is tending to all
these details.
February 8th
I'd like to go to Prague's Mozart Museum tomorrow so I asked the hotel's
front desk to help me plan my route via the subway system. I'll have to walk
a little on both ends, but it looks pretty direct. It is southwest of this hotel,
and across the river.
I went right to sleep last night at about 9 their time, but woke up at 3:30 am
(their time.) I turned on CNN and finally went back to sleep about two hours later.
Woke up at 9 am, got dressed and down for the breakfast.
I am off to the museum now. It is snowing very lightly. My only complaint is
that the sky isn't blue. It's gray with the snow flurries.
The museum was closed.
I just got back from my Metro ride to the Mozart museum. What a disappointment -
the museum closed in November. A woman walking her dog in the property
next door to the museum told me that they had legal trouble, and do no know
when they can re-open. This dog walker told me that they should have mentioned
this on the web site!!
At least, I figured how to ride the Metro, and was able to return to my hotel.
The Metro stop is a few minutes walk from here. On the way back to the
hotel, whom should I see getting out of his limo, carrying his own bags, but
Anthony. I am in the right place for sure!! I yelled hello to him and asked
and how he was doing. He said "lot of pressure" so I said "break a leg."
He went in the entrance where all those black boxes were along the other
side of the church.
My greatest difficulty walking around at first was finding signs showing
the names of the streets at the intersections. Then, I realized that the
street name signs are on the buildings, if you can find them at all.
